The pressure works on two fronts: a new rule updating a 19th-century "public charge" test could restrict immigrants' access to green cards, confronting them with a hard choice. The courts remain the only brake: a federal appeals court ruled that migrants may contest deportations to countries other than their place of origin, a case that could head to the Supreme Court. And a judge stays skeptical the administration has fully abandoned its dropped $1.8 billion fund for people who say the justice system wronged them; the suit is ongoing.
Trump has barred three news organizations — CNN, MSNow and Politico — from the White House. Pressed on what he actually wants, the president pivoted immediately to money he says networks have paid him, a slip CNN's Jake Tapper flagged. The pretext is grievance; the tell is cash and control over who gets to report. Control is the point elsewhere too: more US military personnel have reportedly died in the Iran war than the Pentagon has shared publicly, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth works to change how that war is reported instead of the failures on the ground.
Abroad, Trump announced a deal with Denmark granting Washington "permanent control over security" in Greenland. At home the squeeze lands on working people through fuel: diesel hit a fresh record high, with US refineries running at 97 to 98 percent of capacity and a possible export ban on the table.
The violence of this climate is not abstract. A Sikh truck driver, identified by the surname Singh, was beaten and stabbed 17 times at a rest stop off a Wyoming highway on Sunday; the suspect is charged with attempted murder. The driver survived.
