What we collect (and how little)

For ordinary browsing we do not ask you to provide any personal information, and we do not require you to create an account or log in. The site does not collect your name, your reading history tied to your identity, or a profile of your interests.

Our web server and infrastructure providers process limited technical information that is inherent to how the internet works, such as the request your browser makes for a page and a network address. As described below, address information used for analytics is anonymised before it is stored, and we do not use ordinary server logs to identify or profile individual readers.

If you choose to contact us, or to subscribe to our optional email digest, you provide the information in that message or sign-up (for example, an email address). We use that information only for the purpose for which you gave it to us, as described in the relevant sections below.

Cookieless analytics and Do Not Track / Global Privacy Control

We measure how the site is used with privacy-first, cookieless analytics. Our analytics software does not set cookies and does not assign you a persistent identifier. Visitor network addresses are anonymised before they are stored, and the resulting statistics are aggregate — for example, how many people read a story or which country a group of visits came from — and are never linked to your identity.

We honour the Do Not Track (DNT) and Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals that your browser or an extension can send. If either signal is present in your request, no analytics run at all for your visit. This means you can opt out of analytics entirely, at any time, simply by enabling one of these signals in your browser — you do not need to contact us or find a setting on our site.

Because our analytics are aggregate and cannot be traced back to an individual, we are generally unable to isolate or "look up" a single person’s activity even if asked, which is by design.

No cookies

This site does not set cookies for analytics, advertising, or tracking. We do not deploy the kinds of cookies or similar technologies that follow you between sites or build a profile of your behaviour, and we do not permit advertising networks to do so through our pages.

If any strictly necessary technical storage is ever required for a core function to work, it would be limited to that function and would not be used to track you. Where third-party content is embedded (see "Third-party links and content"), that third party’s own technologies are governed by that third party’s policies, not ours.

No accounts and locally-stored bookmarks

There are no reader accounts on this site and there is no login. You cannot, and do not need to, register to read.

If you save items to a reading list or bookmark them, that information is stored only in your own browser, on your own device, using local browser storage. It is never transmitted to us and we never receive or store it. Clearing your browser’s local storage will remove those saved items, and we have no copy of them to restore.

Newsletter data

Subscribing to our email digest is entirely optional. If you subscribe, your email address is held by our external newsletter provider for the sole purpose of delivering the digest to you. Your email address is not stored in this site’s own database, and it is not linked to your browsing, your analytics visits, or any reading history.

You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in the footer of any digest email, which removes you from the mailing list. If you have any difficulty unsubscribing, you can also contact us using the details in the "How to contact us about privacy" section and we will remove you.

Our newsletter provider processes your email address on our behalf under an agreement that limits use of that information to providing the mailing service. We do not use your subscription to advertise to you on behalf of third parties.

Advertising and no ad tracking

Any advertising on this site is sold directly by us. We do not use a real-time bidding system or an advertising network that auctions your attention or follows you across the web. Advertisements are displayed within a sandboxed frame that is isolated from the rest of the page.

We do not set advertising cookies and we do not create or share a cross-site identifier for advertising. When you click an advertisement, the click is counted and redirected on our own server; advertisers receive only aggregate counts of how their advertisements performed and never receive personal information about you. Unsold advertising space may be filled with promotions for our own work. Paid placements and any sponsored content are clearly labelled.

Legal bases for processing (GDPR)

Where the EU or UK General Data Protection Regulation applies, we rely on the following legal bases. For the very limited, anonymised analytics and for operating and securing the site, we rely on our legitimate interests in understanding and maintaining our service in a privacy-protective way; we have designed this processing to minimise any impact on your rights.

For the optional email digest, we rely on your consent, which you give by subscribing and can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing. Where we must process information to comply with a legal obligation — for example, to respond to a valid legal request — we rely on that legal obligation as our basis.

Your rights under the GDPR

If the GDPR applies to you, you have the right to request access to the personal information we hold about you, to request correction of inaccurate information, and to request erasure of your information. You also have the right to object to, or request restriction of, certain processing, the right to data portability where applicable, and the right to withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent.

You may exercise these rights by contacting us using the details below. We will respond within the time required by law. Please note that because we hold very little personal information — for most readers, none that identifies you — we may not have information to provide, correct, or delete, and we may need to ask you for details to locate any information that does relate to you (for example, a newsletter email address).

California privacy rights (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use it, the right to request deletion of personal information we have collected from you, the right to correct inaccurate personal information, and the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information.

We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. Given our cookieless, no-account design, we collect almost no personal information in the first place. We honour the Global Privacy Control signal as an opt-out preference signal. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your privacy rights.

You may submit a request to know, delete, or correct by contacting us using the details below. We will verify your request to the extent we hold information that can be associated with you.

International data transfers

We and our service providers (such as our hosting provider and our newsletter provider) may process the limited information described in this policy in countries other than your own. Where information is transferred across borders, we take steps intended to ensure it remains protected, including relying on providers that offer appropriate safeguards and contractual protections recognised under applicable law.

Because the information involved is minimal and, for analytics, anonymised, the privacy impact of any such transfer is correspondingly limited.

Data retention

We keep information only for as long as it is needed for the purpose for which it was collected. Aggregated, anonymised analytics may be retained to understand trends over time, but because they are aggregate they do not identify you.

If you subscribe to the digest, our newsletter provider retains your email address until you unsubscribe or we discontinue the digest, after which it is removed from active mailing use. Messages you send us are kept only as long as needed to handle your enquiry and any follow-up.

Children’s privacy

This site is intended for a general, adult audience and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13 (or under 16 where a higher age applies under local law).

If you believe a child has provided us with personal information — for example, by subscribing to the digest — please contact us and we will take reasonable steps to delete it.

Security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect the limited information we handle against loss, misuse, and unauthorised access. This includes serving the site over encrypted connections and limiting who can access any information we hold.

No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. Because we deliberately hold so little personal information, the amount of information exposed in any incident is inherently limited.

Third-party links and content

As a news aggregator, most items link out to, excerpt, or summarise reporting published by other outlets, and headlines, thumbnails, and media may be loaded directly from the original publisher. When you follow a link to another site, or when your browser loads media hosted by a publisher, that other site or publisher controls the information practices that apply, under its own privacy policy.

We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of third-party sites and services. We encourage you to read the privacy policy of any site you visit through our links.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or in the law. When we do, we will revise the effective date shown at the top of this page.

If we make a material change, we will take reasonable steps to make it prominent. Your continued use of the site after an update takes effect indicates your awareness of the revised policy.
