Advertising Disclosure
This Advertising Disclosure explains how advertising works on this site, how we label it, and — importantly — what we do not do. Our advertising is designed to respect your privacy: it is sold directly, it does not track you, and it sets no advertising cookie or cross-site identifier.
How ads work here
Advertising on this site is sold directly by us to advertisers. We do not use a real-time bidding system, an advertising exchange, or an ad network that auctions your attention or follows you across the web. A placement is agreed with an advertiser and shown to readers in the relevant slot.
Advertisements are displayed inside a sandboxed frame that is isolated from the rest of the page, which limits what an advertisement can do and prevents it from reaching into your browsing on the rest of the site.
Clear labelling of ads and sponsored content
Paid placements are clearly labelled as advertisements so you can tell them apart from our editorial content. Any sponsored content — content an advertiser has paid to have produced or featured — is clearly identified as sponsored.
We keep advertising visually and functionally distinct from our reporting, and advertisers do not control our editorial selection or the arrangement of aggregated items.
No reader tracking and no ad cookies
Advertising on this site does not track you. We do not set advertising cookies, and we do not create or share a cross-site identifier for advertising purposes.
When you click an advertisement, the click is counted and redirected on our own server rather than through a third-party tracker. This lets us report performance to advertisers without exposing your identity or building a profile of you.
House promotions
When an advertising slot is not filled by a paid campaign, we may show house promotions — our own messages about our reporting, features, or email digest — in that space.
House promotions are our own content and are subject to the same no-tracking approach as everything else on the site.
Advertiser data
Advertisers receive only aggregate information about how their advertisements performed, such as the number of times a placement was shown or clicked. They do not receive personal information about you, and they cannot use our pages to identify or re-target you elsewhere.
Affiliate links
We do not currently use affiliate links or earn commissions on products or services linked from the site. If that ever changes, we will disclose any affiliate or commission relationship clearly at the point where it applies, so you always know when a link may earn us a commission.
