The Daily Brief
Today
Good morning. The sharpest story today is the state's violence against the people it governs. An American-born citizen who survived being shot five times by a federal immigration officer in Chicago is suing the US government. A former FBI intelligence analyst alleges that Trump ordered the bureau to launch unconstitutional investigations into immigration-enforcement protesters from the Los Angeles area. The administration is deporting LGBTQ asylum seekers to Sierra Leone, where they could face life in prison. And the Archdiocese of St. Louis has sued ICE officials over a jail policy that blocks Catholic detainees from practicing their faith.
To justify the clampdown, the administration manufactures external threats. Trump's implication that Iran could "take out" Los Angeles and San Diego horrified residents of both cities — though Iran has no nuclear program and no missiles that can reach them. The same president falsely claimed his war against Iran ended eight months before he started it. Meanwhile a suspected Iranian drone plot pushed the US Air Force to evacuate bombers from RAF Fairford, where British police arrested a 22-year-old on suspicion of terrorism offenses.
The attack on bodily autonomy continues: Todd Blanche's marching orders on abortion restrictions expose the lie that overturning Roe simply returned the question to the states. The grift runs beside it — GOP gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman's filing appears to count donations more than once, while a former CIA official has pleaded guilty to a $195 million gold-bar fraud. Trump retreats to friendly ground, rallying in Nebraska past $4.14-a-gallon gas and the war he promised to avoid.
The costs land on the poorest. A super El Niño, global warming and the war against Iran have combined into a hunger crisis falling hardest on children and the poorest workers and farmers, even as federal rule changes threaten to cut free child care for low-income families and a tropical storm builds over the Gulf.
Zoom out: The day's through-line is an administration that promised to avoid a Middle East war now turning immigration agents, the FBI and the deportation machine on the people at home while manufacturing a foreign threat to justify it.
