The Daily Brief

Today

Good morning. The war in Ukraine has been thrown into a new moment of chaos and crisis, Ukraine abruptly cut off from a satellite service crucial to its wartime efforts as Russian missiles barraged Kyiv. Vox puts it without hedging: Trump is taking his midterms anger out on Ukraine. Elon Musk, whose company supplies the service, did not deny the suspension — he blamed the US military. The billionaire and the administration point fingers while a wartime presidency is run for domestic spite.

The costs land on workers. Inflation accelerated to 3.7% in September as energy costs soared amid Trump's war with Iran. Iran has meanwhile ramped up ship strikes in Hormuz, making October one of the most violent months there since the war began. The president's confrontations abroad are paid for at the pump and the checkout.

At home, the machinery of repression grinds on. Lawyers for Oscar Belgal say the ICE agent who shot him in New York City never identified himself, firing into a vehicle with his young son in the back seat. A watchdog group sued to oust Jared Kushner from his role as a top envoy as unlawful and riddled with conflicts. A judge again ordered the White House to restore access for CNN, MS NOW and Politico, banned over their coverage, and their lawyer is ready to take the fight to the Supreme Court — even as Trump played a flattering CNN segment at an Arizona rally.

The political ground is shifting. The Kansas Senate race moved from Leans Republican to Toss-Up, and Republicans are in triage mode, defending seats they already hold as the House map expands. Capital does not wait on voters: the Supreme Court handed Republican candidates an advertising edge for the final weeks. Yet the Democratic establishment is choosing to attack the left rather than lean into the progressivism gaining traction across the country.

Zoom out: A president waging confrontations abroad with Iran and Ukraine is driving up prices at home and leaving his own party scrambling to defend seats as the midterms approach.
