The Daily Brief
Today
Good morning. With the midterms a week away, Donald Trump has already set an operation in motion to overturn the vote in Texas, Alaska and other battleground states through what his side frames as a "legal" reversal of voters' choice. He is moving to reverse a result he is losing: Democrats hold an 8-point lead among likely voters as Trump's disapproval drives early turnout, and forecaster Nate Silver now puts a GOP wipeout on the table. Top Democrats including Jeffries are fanning out to red states to neutralize the Republican redistricting maneuver, while Congress works to free Trump of the limited legal requirements the Supreme Court left on him.
The Justice Department filed more charges against former FBI director James Comey — a man already charged twice in investigations he has described as politically motivated. Two other former FBI officials face a preliminary hearing over allegations they lied to Congress about Hunter Biden investigations.
On November 3 the Supreme Court hears St. Mary Catholic Parish v. Roy, which asks whether the Constitution authorizes discrimination by religious schools — and could force taxpayers to fund it. In Missouri, Amendment 3 would roll back the abortion right voters enshrined in the state constitution two years ago. And the first deadline to leave the SAVE plan hits in early November, after which the administration will place borrowers who don't move onto the most expensive repayment plan.
Abroad, South Africa will deploy troops in KwaZulu-Natal, a province hit by anti-immigrant violence, ahead of municipal elections next week. Marco Rubio skipped meeting Narendra Modi, focusing instead on business leaders and oil. At home, Meta shut down a No Kings account as Democrats demand answers from Mark Zuckerberg, while a monopoly on mortgages is finally loosening.
Zoom out: A week before the midterms, with Democrats leading and Trump's disapproval driving turnout, the administration is laying the groundwork to reverse the vote while turning federal prosecutors against its critics.
