The Daily Brief

Today

Good morning. Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers and the organizer who popularized the rallying cry “Sí, se puede!”, died Wednesday at the age of 96. Lawmakers, activists and union leaders across the country poured out tributes to a woman who fought for farm workers to the very end.

The same day, the Federal Reserve held interest rates unchanged while acknowledging that inflation remains elevated — the same institution whose early-1980s policies triggered a recession that weakened workers’ power and ushered in an era of extreme inequality. In New York, a Siena poll found support for Mayor Zohran Mamdani surging even as rents hit record highs.

The right’s war on elections kept its own pace. In Minnesota, MAGA media figures James O’Keefe and Cam Higby [were charged with election fraud after allegedly presenting fake identities to election workers to sow doubt about the midterms](https://www.ms.now/news/news-analysis/james-okeefe-cam-higby-minnesota-charges-election-fraud-midterms), while in Wisconsin GOP gubernatorial candidate Tom Tiffany refused to sign a pledge asking candidates to refrain from knowingly propagating falsehoods about elections. Meanwhile a group calling itself the Department of Peace released the details of more than 41,000 DHS staff, exposing thousands of the immigration agents the administration turns on migrants.

The administration moved to shelter the defeated right-wing Brazilian candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, even as Brazilian equities continued to sell off; it let compounding pharmacies make six peptides unapproved by the FDA; and its Justice Department was caught contradicting itself before a federal judge over a historic Washington golf course, as a judge ordered a new hearing on Trump’s plans to redevelop East Potomac Park.

Zoom out: On the Wednesday Dolores Huerta died, the Fed held rates steady amid elevated inflation, the administration moved to shelter Brazil's defeated right, two MAGA media figures were charged with election fraud, and thousands of immigration agents were exposed in a mass hack.
