The Daily Brief
Today
Good morning. On the eve of Tuesday's vote the administration escalated its assault on the ballot. The Supreme Court [rejected the Justice Department's last-minute attempt to force California to set aside roughly 20,000 mail-in ballots](https://www.rawstory.com/trump-election-lawsuit-2678192292), even as the administration's claim that about 20,000 noncitizens may be registered is disputed by local officials. The loss came as the DoJ charged six more people with alleged voter fraud crimes in the state, while California officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom, brace for interference, including attempted ballot seizures.
Trump's own closing pitch was conspicuously empty. His 47-minute appearance Monday afternoon at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool dwelt, as the Times noted, on columns, drain pipes and granite at the refilled pool, while his final message to voters largely focused on D.C. renovations rather than the costs crushing working people. He reached for "communist jihadists" as a line of attack and contended Republicans "will win in a landslide" if his supporters show up.
The ground is shifting under him. Millions have already cast ballots as early voting surged in Senate battlegrounds, and Cook Political Report moved the Michigan Senate race to lean Democratic in its final 2026 ratings. The grievances are material: employer health premiums are set to rise sharply, with workers shouldering more of the cost. In the Rio Grande Valley, Voto Latino's Maria Teresa Kumar says Latino voters who swung toward Trump are being pushed back by high costs, tariffs and immigration enforcement — an enforcement machine so unaccountable that ICE paid half a billion dollars for a Minnesota prison offered in 2025 for $75 million.
None of this arrives on its own. As organizers at the Minnesota Socialism Summit argued, only people power can transform society — the courts held this week, but a system that serves workers is won in the streets and the precincts, not conceded by a bench.
Zoom out: On the eve of the 2026 midterms, the administration is throwing federal muscle at California's ballots while the president spends his closing argument on fountains and landscaping.
