The Daily Brief

Today

Good morning. The blue wave that handed Democrats control of Congress is now hitting capital where it lives: an intensifying rout of tech stocks spread Friday from Wall Street to Asia and Europe, as investors read the election as a threat to the AI build-out they had bet everything on. The people who just voted did not do it for shareholders.

They voted on the cost of staying alive. [Voter frustration with healthcare costs fueled the takeover, but Democratic control does not mean Medicare for All will follow.](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/2026-midterm-elections-medicare-for-all) And the result buried a favorite myth: the notion that Latinos had become Republicans did not survive contact with the ballot. The warning on the left is already there — against the inclination to forgive and forget and move on rather than insist on accountability, the reflex that lets a mandate evaporate.

The administration's answer to a rout is interior decorating. Trump signed a proclamation declaring the Oval Office and Cabinet Room national monuments to lock in his own design, while staffers watch him talk up his ballroom and Reflecting Pool as some look for the exits. Republicans are quietly conceding there may be no 2028 lane for anyone tied to him.

None of that reaches the ground the state is still grinding. ICE deportations are emptying public schools of immigrant families as enrollment is set to fall by 2 million kids by 2030; new documents reveal roughly 68.2 miles of secondary barrier planned at Big Bend; and voters in Washington and Colorado approved measures banning transgender athletes from school sports. The machinery does not pause for a midterm.

Zoom out: A Democratic midterm sweep is reverberating outward — into global markets, the healthcare fight, a myth about Latino voters, and a White House that answers losses with gold decor and new monuments.
