Capital Studies Its Victims While Stripping Assets

The same logic runs through the AI lab, the devastated neighborhood, the historical ledger, and the trade war: capital and the state collaborate to extract value from workers and communities while managing the fallout. The sources reveal a system that studies its own violence even as it commits it.

At OpenAI, the company building the automation pipeline has installed a chief economist, Ronnie Chatterji, to lead a team of researchers who study how AI is affecting workers, employers, and the broader economy. The firm commissions research on the displacement its products drive — a feedback loop where the predator audits the wound.

The pattern is not new. The loss of land for Black Americans started with the government's betrayal of its "40 acres" promise to formerly enslaved people — and it has continued over decades. State power broke the contract, then stood aside as capital stripped the asset base of a people. The ledger stays open.

In Gary, Indiana, the mechanism is naked financial extraction. The collapse of infrastructure in Gary and the broader Calumet region is the result of decades of policies through which the financial elite has drained resources from essential physical assets and funneled them into speculation. Blackouts stretching into a second week are not accidents; they are the receipts of a strategy that treats water pipes and power grids as balance-sheet liabilities to be shed.

The trade war extends the logic across borders. The administration is set to impose 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian products, a move that will hit about 5% of what Canada ships to the United States every year. Tariffs are sold as protection; in practice they are a tax on working-class consumers and a lever to discipline labor on both sides of the line.

Four datapoints, one architecture. The economist measures the job loss the model creates. The state reneges on the deed that would have anchored generational wealth. The financier strips the substation to feed the hedge fund. The president signs the order that raises the price of lumber and steel for the families who build the homes. The researchers, the policymakers, the speculators, and the executives — they all know what they are doing. The rest of us pay the bill.
