Carceral Throughput, Head Start Cuts, ICE Killing Fields

Each year approximately 450,000 to 600,000 people return home from federal and state prison, a churn that sustains the carceral apparatus rather than dismantling it. The scale of this throughput — hundreds of thousands of workers, parents, neighbors processed through cages and dumped back into communities stripped of resources — measures the system's appetite for managed abandonment.

The administration is moving to slim regulation of the 60-year-old anti-poverty program Head Start, aiming to save money. Advocates warn the changes could undermine the early education program's mission. This is not fiscal prudence; it is a deliberate throttling of the meager floor beneath poor children while capital secures its tax cuts and subsidies.

Refugees fleeing persecution only to be swept up by ICE win support of a congregation, including some who voted for Trump. Their pastor mobilized the church — proof that the cruelty of immigration enforcement fractures even the administration's own electoral coalition.

When 25-year-old Glendy Marisol González de la Cruz took her three daughters and boarded a plane from St. Louis to Guatemala City on June 17, her friends begged her not to go. She had no other option: her husband, Nixon Giovanni Pérez Paz, who worked as a roofer and was the family's sole provider, had been detained. ICE advised her to self-deport. Five weeks later, she was dead. The state outsourced its killing to desperation.

Two more deaths at Delaney Hall detention center as ICE arrests surge. Alleged lack of medical care contributed to the deaths, in addition to 22 deaths in ICE custody this year. The detention archipelago expands, the body count rises, and the administration calls it enforcement. It is a policy of attrition by neglect.

Three flashpoints, one logic: the carceral state processes poor and working people — disproportionately Black, Brown, and migrant — through prisons, strips the programs that sustain their children, and hunts them across borders until they die. The administration serves capital by managing surplus population with cages, austerity, and lethal deterrence. The congregations, the advocates, the families in the visiting rooms: they are the only ones keeping count.
